Bears Must Go Defense No Matter What

Official Chicago Bears Fan Reporter

In the 2014 movie Draft Day, general manager Sonny Weaver Jr. is under pressure as to whom to pick at the number one spot. Throughout the movie, Weaver carries a Post-it note with something written on it. As the drama of his life unfolds, the camera reveals these words, “Vontae Mack no matter what,” linebacker with a chip on his shoulder. Thirty-two teams with thirty-two GMs and head coaches put their jobs on the line for that number one draft pick. The question is who will it be?

For the Chicago Bears, they must go defense no matter what. With the eighth pick in the first-round, they have the option of moving up or trading down, especially if they go defense. The Bears hosted the sought after and elite edge rusher out of North Carolina, Bradley Chubb, just a few weeks ago. They were not disappointed. But what are they willing to trade to get him? Well, with limited picks I don’t see that happening. However, it is the NFL and anything can happen, but Chubb falling to the Bears at eight is a stretch. OurTurf’s Mock NFL Draft Part 1

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman//@WandaW63

Free agency is pretty much on the quiet front with some players still trickling on to teams, such as quarterback Blaine Gabbert to the Tennessee Titans, and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to the Los Angeles Rams.  But now it’s all about the draft and filling the holes that will make or break a team. So here is my attempt at Round 1 of the NFL Draft.

The Quarterback Matrix: Who will be The One

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman //@WandaW63

Last season it was about defenses and backup quarterbacks. It was calm, cool, collectiveness of backup QB Nick Foles who lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a long overdue Super Bowl trophy. All 31 teams were put on notice after that and the QB carousel has been in full swing since the start of free agency.

Just in case some of you have been under a rock, here are the QB changes that have occurred in the past two-weeks of the quarterback matrix.

After a lengthy, but meticulous process, former Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is now a Minnesota Viking. Washington traded with the Kansas City Chiefs for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft pick, making QB Alex Smith a Washington Redskin. Smith signed a four-year, $94 million extension with Washington, while Cousins signed a three-year $84 million fully guaranteed contract.

Is your head spinning yet?

The March Madness of Free Agency

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

The long-anticipated trades and free agency frenzy has finally arrived. It began with a surge of trades throughout the league ignited by the Seattle Seahawks. A shock to the Seattle fans, defensive end Michael Bennett is traded to the Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles and a seventh round pick in exchange for a fifth round pick. But what seemed like a simple trade was the beginning of players released which included cornerback Richard Sherman and Jeremy Lane, tight end Jimmy Graham and wide receiver Paul Richardson. Seahawks did re-sign DB Bradley McDougald.

But the Bennett trade also ignited a trading bonanza by the Cleveland Browns as they gave up a 2018 4th rounder and a 2019 seventh-rounder for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry, This was followed up by a trade of their top third-round pick for Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor. But before anyone could take a breath, the Browns swapped fourth and fifth round picks for Green Bay Packers cornerback Damarious Randall in exchange for QB DeShone Kizer.

Honoring the Women Who Paved the Way to the NFL

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

by Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

There are some that would say every day is International Women’s Day and in some way, they are right, but not based on the usual reasons. The struggle of gender equality has been going on for centuries but not surprising is the list of women who have overcome that. Eleanor Roosevelt once said:  “A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”

How true a statement that is! I come from a long line of strong women who persevered and overcame many obstacles. But today is a day to celebrate and honor just a few women who paved the way in the National Football League, which has always been a boys club.

Will Ryan Pace Go Rogue Again in the NFL Draft?

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

The list of possibilities are endless and the Chicago Bears need to make all their 2018 NFL Draft picks count. But will General Manager Ryan Pace go rogue like he did last year by trading up one spot for their franchise quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky?  I wouldn’t put it past him. He was very adamant about getting the best player off the board to fill their needs. The question is, what need will the Bears focus on? Will they go offense with a wide receiver or guard? Or defense with an outside linebacker or cornerback?

Now that the 2018 NFL Combine has painted a picture of what options are available, the Bears have a few choices to make in free agency and the draft.  Let’s take a look at free agency first.

What Matt Forte’ meant to Chicago

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

The Chicago Bears has a history of elite running backs with four of them enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Red Grange, an immortal part of football history once score five touchdowns in a single game for the University of Illinois. He was pursued by George “Papa Bear” Halas, became a Bear who brought in the crowd. He finished his career with a defensive tackle to help Chicago win 23-21 over the Giants.

Then came Bronko Nagurski, a symbol of terrifying, bone-crushing power. He was like a charging bull against any defense but was just as terrifying on defense when he tackled.  But when it came to versatility on the field, Gale Sayers was like a twisting tornado in run plays, a kick and punt returner and receiver when needed. Walter Payton took that even further and added quarterback, punter, wide receiver and tackler.

Chicago Bears Mock Draft: 7-Round Scenario

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

Open up a sports website or social media sites and you will find several NFL mock drafts to choose from. There are some that have pretty much the same players on their board, while others go for the less than big name prospects.

But how would the Chicago Bears 7-Round scenario look if all the favorites at the number eight spot pan out? Here is a brief summary of what that could look like.

Ranking Top 5 Bears Draft Prospects by Position

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

The Chicago Bears have spent the last five to six years rebuilding, and it appears that they may have found the right coaching staff to take back the NFC North. But they have to make a splash in the 2018 NFL Draft with one pick in Rounds 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7, none in the 3rd and two in Round 4. Depending on trades, a third-round pick could surface. However, they could lose the 7th round pick from the Dontrelle Inman trade back in October.

The biggest offseason needs for the Bears are Wide Receiver, Right Tackle, Defensive End and Cornerback.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the top five prospects at each positional need.

Introducing The Mount Rushmore of Bears Middle Linebackers

Official Chicago Bears Reporter

By Wanda Wiedman // @WandaW63

Etched on the side of a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota is a monument with the faces of four of our country’s most prolific presidents. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have seen this remarkable memorial, a testament to those who have taken part in building this country.

But in the city of Chicago, they finally have their own monument of middle linebackers that will be forever embodied in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The Chicago Bears have 27 players enshrined in the PFHOF and on August 3, 2018, the 28th member will be inducted; middle linebacker Brian Urlacher.

But in order to understand and embrace the romance and charisma these impact players made for Chicago, it would only be fitting to introduce the Mount Rushmore of Bears middle linebackers.
