NFC West: Most important players for each team going forward

One of the most common things I see on social media are arguments between fans about who is the most important player on a team. Is it the franchise quarterback? Is it the leader on defense? Is it the coach? It seems only fitting that with today being Russell Wilson‘s birthday, that we should take a look at this question inside the NFC West.

Going into week 13, two teams stand heads and tails above the other two, and above most teams in the NFC. When looking at all four franchises, there seem obvious answers to the question I posed above, but is it really so cut and dry? I’m not so sure.

With only a few games left in the season, for three teams in the AFC North, this weekend will have a huge impact on the playoff picture.

The Baltimore Ravens have been lighting things up and quarterback Lamar Jackson is  fast becoming a front-runner for league MVP.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns meet again for the much-anticipated re-match following their game-ending brawl of just two weeks ago.

And the Cincinnati Bengals are still fighting to get that first win of the season.

Let’s take a look at the games for this week…

The NFC North top performers from week 12

Sonja Greenfield, Senior NFL Reporter NFC North, NFC East

By Sonja Greenfield // @Mom23RN

Week 12 is in the books for the NFC North.

The Vikings had a bye, the Bears won, and both the Lions and Packers lost. Yet another lackluster week for a division that I’m reporting on. I think maybe the universe is telling me something. I digress.

But just like in the NFC East, despite the fact that only 1 team won a game, there were still some players that performed well. Come with me as I head around the division to find out who were the top performers.

The NFC East Top Performers from Week 12

Sonja Greenfield, Senior NFL Reporter NFC North, NFC East

By Sonja Greenfield  //@Mom23RN

It’s another week is in the books and week 12 saw a pretty good lineup of games for the NFC East. The Cowboys took on the Patriots, the Redskins matched up against the Lions, the Giants traveled to Chicago and the Eagles hosted the Seahawks. And who was the only team in the NFC East to get a win? The 1-9 Washington Redskins. How about that?

Despite overall slightly lackluster performances by the NFC East, there were some who did play well and were top performers in the division this week.  Let’s head around the division and see who they were! Continue reading “The NFC East Top Performers from Week 12”

Monday Night Football kicks off Thanksgiving week

It’s the official beginning of the holidays, Thanksgiving week! It’s also the beginning of a fantastic week of football, and it all kicks off with Monday Night Football featuring the Los Angeles Rams and the Baltimore Ravens. Let’s take a look at everything coming up this week.

Tonight, the Rams (6-4) take on the red hot (purple hot?) Ravens (8-2)  at home in LA. Now, at the beginning of the season, this would have been touted as one of the best games of the season, but the Rams have struggled more than we thought they would this year, and the Ravens…well they have been killing it.

Week 12 could answer the question: Who wants to win the AFC South?

Kate Arhar

The AFC South division is one that has been hotly contested so far this season.

With the teams all hovering around the .500 mark, this week has them going head-to-head to see who can take over the top spot.

The Houston Texans took on the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night Football, while the Tennessee Titans will face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at 4:05 pm EST.

While the outcome of these games won’t reveal the ultimate winner of the division, it could be the beginning of someone breaking away from the pack.

A Battle Brewing: A big week in the race for AFC West

Dayna O’Gorman

There is a battle brewing in the AFC West. A battle that not anyone, except the most die-hard silver and black fan, would have predicted. The Kansas City Chiefs (7-4) are sitting at the top of the division, just like those who do preseason predictions thought they would be. Yet, sitting right behind them are the Oakland Raiders (6-4). With the Chiefs on a bye week, could the Raiders pull even this weekend, setting up a race for the finish line? Week 12 in the AFC West may set the pace for that race.

The Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football in Mexico City, putting them at 3-0 in the division. Both teams now have a desperately needed bye week. The Denver Broncos (3-7) are heading up to Buffalo to play the Bills (7-3), which with the way the Bills have been playing, will be a difficult task for the struggling Broncos.

Dear Chicago Bears Fan

Sonja Greenfield, Senior NFL Reporter NFC North, NFC East

Hi, Bears Fans!

Congrats!  For my NFC North article this week, I’m dedicating it to you and your team.  Now, as a Lions fan, I’m going to be good, and not give you too hard of a time, but I may slip just a little. So, forgive me in advance, but it’s all in good rivalry fun.  I can’t say too much though. At least your team has won a Super Bowl.

But you guys, I am confused. What’s up with your quarterback, Mitch Trubisky?  Or as I affectionately like to call him, Mr. Buiscut.  I (sort of) feel bad for you.

Yes, I along with many others, laughed when your team traded up to get him in the 2017 draft. He had a typical rookie season, he showed promise, etc. Then came 2018 and you traded for linebacker Khalil Mack.  I was admittedly, as the kids like to say…shook.  The chances of the Lions sweeping the Bears got a little slimmer, not totally gone, but slimmer.

NFC South division matchups turn into blowouts

Kate Arhar
Senior Sports Editor AFC North and NFC South

By Kate Arhar // @ClvlndK8

Week 11 saw two division matchups for the NFC South, and both games ended up being blowouts.

While that in itself may not sound surprising, the resurgence of the Atlanta Falcons and their decisive win over the Carolina Panthers most definitely was a surprise – at least to me! With their third win of the season, the Falcons are now 3-7, but at least they are not alone at the bottom of the division. After losing to the New Orleans Saints, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also 3-7.

The Saints extend their lead in the division with a record of 8-2 and with the loss, the Panthers drop to 5-5 and their playoff hopes have pretty much been decimated.

It seems the Defenses came to play this week with both winners garnering four interceptions in their respective games!
