A confusing week in the AFC West

Editors Note: Thank you all for being so patient while we got our website up and running again. It has become obvious to us that we need to do a major overhaul of the site during the offseason, so please continue to stick with us while we finish out the season. Thank you from all of us at OTFB.

A blowout that no one expected, and a blowout that should have been but wasn’t. The wonder kid quarterback that can’t win, and the team without any quarterbacks at all. All of this sums up a very odd week in the AFC West. A week that was basically the definition of 2020.

The fight for the top of the NFC West

NFC West/AFC West

In just a handful of plays, in a couple of different games, the waters got muddy in the NFC West. The Seattle Seahawks decided this week was the week to forget they were the best offense in the league, and the Los Angeles Rams took full advantage of it. The Arizona Cardinals, on a wing and a prayer (and the arm of their quarterback), threw a Hail Mary that was almost impossible to catch… until they did.

These two games created a log jam at the top of the NFC West. Three teams that are 6-3. We knew this was the best division in football, and this week proved it is going to be a fight to the end to win it.

Giving the NFC East a pass

Sonja Greenfield, Senior NFL Reporter NFC North, NFC East

By Sonja Greenfield //@Mom23RN

We’ve all heard the jokes and seen the tweets and the memes about the NFC East. Or as some like to call it, the NFC Least.

And, while it is probably the worst division in football, I’d like to give it a pass for this year.

Week 9 was full of close games for the AFC West

2 points. 7 points. 5 points. That was how close all the games for the AFC West were this weekend. The Week 9 matchups were stressful nailbiters for all 4 teams. At the end of it all, the standings pretty much stayed the same but proved this division could get fun down the road.

Carolina Panthers   31
Kansas City Chiefs  33

The Kansas City Chiefs held on for a 2 point win over the Carolina Panthers in an early game on Sunday, but it wasn’t an easy win in any way. The Panthers came into this game ready to fight. They had nothing to lose. They also had their superstar running back, Christian McCaffrey, back from injury. The entire team started off hot and kept the pressure on the Chiefs the entire game.

The NFC North roundup

Sonja Greenfield, Senior NFL Reporter NFC North, NFC East

By Sonja Greenfield //@Mom23RN

Now that my life is somewhat less complex, let’s talk some football, shall we?

The NFC North has been a division that has surprised me.  At the beginning of the season, if you had told me that the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers would start off the season tied for first, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. But (H)alas, they did. (See what I did there?)

The Bears were what really surprised me at first, but it seems like they’re starting their descent back to Earth. After starting their season 3-0, they’ve gone 2-4. Now, losing running back Tarik Cohen certainly doesn’t help, along with uncertainty at the quarterback position, but their offense just isn’t getting it done. Sunday’s loss to the Titans pretty much showed us that.

Midseason grades: Fan Forum gives Buffalo Bills a B+

As part of our Fan Forum series, I asked our forum members to rate or grade their favorite teams so far through the season. You can read the other members’ comments here, but when I read Ashley Petty‘s answer, I thought it deserved a little space.

In my opinion, the Bills are one of the most fascinating teams in the NFL this year. With quarterback Tom Brady moving on from New England, we knew there was a strong chance that the upstart Bills would fill the void that was left. It hasn’t been perfect, but I think there is a lot of good coming out of upstate New York. As Ashley comments below show, she agrees.

We are halfway through a season we weren’t even sure we were going to get. It seems almost impossible, but the NFL has kept on track during the pandemic and for some teams, things are going quite well. Others…not so much.

I reached out to our fan forum to check in with them to see how they felt their favorite teams were doing 8 weeks into the 2020 season.

Matt Cullen is a new member of our fan forum. He is a long-suffering New York Jets fan, and at the halfway mark, is ready for a change.
