This Sunday, the Miami Dolphins will face the Cincinnati Bengals. Many Dolphins fans will concern themselves only with the outcome of the game and what draft position the Dolphins will eventually end with.
But to the older fans and former players, this game will have another meaning.
You see this Sunday, the Miami Dolphins will honor the “1972 Perfect Season Team” as part of the NFL 100 Greatest in a special halftime ceremony. Every player from the ’72 team will receive a special personalized golden football.
“It’s always special to be around the guys who came together to accomplish what no other team in the 100-year history of the NFL has ever done – the perfect season,” said Hall of Fame Head Coach Don Shula. “It’s only fitting as the League closes out this milestone season that the 1972 Dolphins are officially recognized with an honor that we always knew was true – that they are the greatest team in NFL history.”
To many younger Dolphins fans, those days seem so long ago, memories of a storybook franchise that did something so remarkable that it hasn’t been done since! This was something that had fans dancing in the streets of Miami, celebrating the season of perfection.
Names like Buoniconti, Griese, Csonka. Those names ring out and carry on like an echo through time. Not to mention they were being coached by one of the greatest coaches of all time, Don Shula. Coach Shula still holds the NFL record for most career wins as a head coach, with 347.
I was only 4 years old when the Dolphins went undefeated, yet I feel like I was a part of it. But that’s how the Dolphins make every fan feel. No matter your age. We were all raised with the stories of running back greats Jim Kiick and Larry Csonka.
And how could anyone ever forget the greatest defense to play this game? The No-Name Defense, which I only found out several years ago was given by former Dallas Cowboys coach, Tom Landry. So no matter what, just like winning Super Bowls, no one can ever take this accomplishment away from this team.
Also at this Sunday’s game, the Miami Dolphins are giving every fan in attendance a special edition of the Dolphins Playbook with a commemorative cover. So as you go through the gates, make sure you grab one of these special edition playbooks.
Then stay put at halftime to see the ceremony honoring the greatest team in NFL history, the 1972 Miami Dolphins.
