Oakland Raiders vs LA Rams: What To Watch

Official Reporter, LA Rams

By Lucy Rendler-Kaplan//@lucyRK78

The Los Angeles Rams’ preseason opener was a game we’d all like to forget. This couldn’t be truer for quarterback Sean Mannion. This is a major concern for the Rams (and all of us Rams fans!)

It’s hard to find anything positive about Mannion’s game. He only had a single interception, completed just 3 of 13 passes for 16 yards AND fumbled when linebacker Terrell Suggs stripped the ball from him.

Prior to this first preseason game, Mannion was pretty much a lock at the backup quarterback spot, but has that changed? If head coach Sean McVay isn’t set on Mannion, who would be the next option? QB Colin Kaepernick’s name has been thrown around, and we all know I’m the first in line to sign him, but that doesn’t look like an option, currently. My next pick would be Josh McCown if he doesn’t get the starting job in New York. Robert Griffin III is also a name that keeps coming up, but I’m going to hope this doesn’t happen.

Perhaps McVay will go with Brandon Allen? He played the entire second half of the first preseason game, and while he didn’t make any spectacular plays, he didn’t make many mistakes. Could he be in the running as Jared Goff’s backup?

The number two running back spot will also be something to keep an eye on during the Rams’ second preseason game. While RB Malcolm Brown seems to be favored as Todd Gurley’s backup, both Justin Davis and John Kelly played well last Thursday night. It will be interesting to see which player sees the field most Saturday afternoon. This position seems to be Brown’s spot to lose, so he’ll need to make some big plays to gain first downs Saturday.

The battle continues to heat up for outside linebacker. Samson Ebukam will most likely be a starter, but with Matt Longacre still out, who will take the spot? Defensive ends Trevon Young and Justin Lawler will need to compete heavily before Ogbonnia Okoronkwo returns.

Overall, there are a bunch of exciting storylines to follow in what promises to be an exciting preseason game two!
