Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson signed a 4-year extension late last night, making him the highest paid player in the NFL. Wilson’s contract was set to expire at the end of 2019, but with the extension, he’ll be with Seattle until 2023.

Some of the details of the contract are 4 years, $140 million, a $65 million signing bonus (highest in NFL history), with a total of $107 million guaranteed. These numbers are not a surprise, as most agreed that Wilson would overtake QB Aaron Rodgers as the highest paid player in the league.

There was a lot of hand wringing from fans in Seattle as trade rumors swirled, New York Giants fans were campaigning and Seattle fans were panicking. Then came the deadline. It was announced that Wilson had imposed a deadline of April 15th for a new contract or else he was going to stop talks completely and simply play out the end of his contract.

Twitter was crazed for hours before the deadline, but the stress wasn’t warranted. In the dramatic fashion we are getting used to seeing from the NFL and its players, Wilson announced his new contract late last night… from his bed.

There is no question Wilson deserves this size of contract. The records Wilson holds not only for the Seattle franchise, but in the NFL is long and noteworthy. But more importantly, he has become the face of not only the Seahawks, but of the NFL’s best ambassadors.

And despite the rumor that Wilson’s wife, pop star Ciara, wanted out of the Pacific Northwest for life in the Big Apple, it has been reported that the Wilson family truly wanted to stay in Seattle.

What does this mean for the Seahawks? Mostly it means stability. We are told Wilson’s contract has a no trade clause, which gives players the feeling of security, and fans don’t have to worry their signal caller is leaving each off season. Having your franchise QB locked down means the franchise can focus on other contracts and needs.

And other contracts will quickly become the focus as Seattle has a few important, and probably quite large, contracts looming. Defensive end Frank Clark was franchise tagged by the team this year, and Clark has said he won’t play until his contract is done. Defensive tackle Jarran Reed has had a stellar year in Seattle and is a fan favorite. His contract is also up 2019.

Then there is superstar linebacker Bobby Wagner. Considered one of the best LBs in the league, fans may riot if Wagner isn’t extended, although most expect him to stay in Seattle. It will be interesting to see how Seattle juggles all three of these contracts with Wilson taking such a big piece of the pie.

Many of Wilson’s teammates, other players, and media congratulated Wilson via social media.

For now, Wilson is on top of the NFL, but how long will it last? With players like QB Patrick Mahomes up for new contracts soon, it would seem that it won’t be long before someone else takes the highest paid player position. But for most Seahawks fans, keeping Wilson in Seattle is all that truly matters.
