Miami Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier wasted little time shaking up the top 10 picks going into the 2021 NFL draft. The Dolphins held the third overall pick (which they acquired from the Houston Texans) followed by the 18th pick in the first round.
In a trade that rocked the football world, Grier traded the 3rd overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for their 12th pick, a 2021 third-round pick, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2013. Fans were left reeling at the master craftsmanship Grier was pulling off.
But before fans could even begin to speculate and marvel at the job the GM had done, Grier went right back after it, engaging in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Grier sent Miami’s 12th (which they had just gotten from the 49ers) and a 2022 first-round pick for the Eagles’ 6th pick, moving Miami right back into the top 10.
Now if the first trade didn’t send Dolphins fans over the edge, this one certainly did. With Miami moving back up into the top 10, speculation began to run wild. For the Dolphins to move that far back up, names began to drop.
Could they be going after Kyle Pitts, the super freak tight end out of Florida maybe? Many NFL experts have Miami selecting one of the top 3 wide receivers here. Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, and Devonta Smith are all worthy of a top ten pick. And one of these could give Miami some much-needed offensive weapons to surround Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

While we all sit here speculating just what Grier and the Dolphins will do, many still have questions as to why exactly Miami moved back up to that 6th spot. We have to think that whoever the Dolphins are watching, they didn’t believe that player would be there at 12.
We also have to remember that college pro days are well underway. With Grier personally attending Alabama’s pro day last week, he could shock the NFL world and select a defensive player at 6.
So with just a couple of weeks from the NFL Draft, let’s recap everything that happened. As of right now, Miami holds the 6th and 18th picks in the first round. Two second-round picks, a third-rounder, a fifth-round pick, and two seventh-round picks. Not to mention that the Dolphins have put themselves in a great position for the next few years, with 5 first-round picks over the next 3 years.
Grier has certainly laid down the foundation but now comes the biggest challenge. You have to hit on some of these picks. Everyone knows that draft picks don’t come with guarantees, but in order to build a championship team through the draft, you have to hit on impact players. We just have to hope that the Dolphins have done their homework and make these picks count.
Just don’t be too surprise if Grier makes another shocking move on who they select. He has already proven he’ll think outside the box.
