Going into the 2019 NFL season many teams have needs. Some have different needs than others, but no need is more important than that of the quarterback. There are at least 5 teams that are going to need some help at that position.
The Denver Broncos addressed theirs by agreeing in principle for Baltimore Ravens benched QB Joe Flacco. While Flacco won’t be the answer long term for the Broncos, he will at least give them some time to find their franchise quarterback.
Many NFL analysts have ranted that this 2019 quarterback class, to say it nicely, is average. No one guy stands out at this moment. You’d have to assume Bronco’s GM John Elway agrees with that assessment since he pulled the trigger so quickly on Flacco. I’ve always felt that if you pick a player in the first round, that player has to start day one. I just don’t feel that there are day one starters in this draft, which in my mind is why Flacco is a Bronco.
So what does this signing mean for the other teams that are quarterback-starved? It means another free agent/ “Gap” quarterback is about to hit the market. If the Broncos can’t find a team to trade their one and done QB, Case Keenum to, then he is expected to be released.
Going into the 2019 season here are some notable quarterbacks that are expected to hit the market.
Blake Bortles, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is expected to be released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Going a little further south to Miami, per reports from Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are expected to ‘move on’ from their former first-rounder as well, Ryan Tannehill.

The Eagles still hold all the cards on quarterback Nick Foles, who, as expected, voided his contract with the Eagles in the way of a 2 million dollar cashier check. The Eagles will most likely place a franchise tag on him, and once they do that, they’ll possibly seek a trade partner to move him.
No question those three quarterbacks will garner some interest. Also garnering interest will be some of these top 10 of unrestricted free agent quarterbacks. Names like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Teddy Bridgewater, Tyrod Taylor, Josh McCown, Robert Griffin III, Brock Osweiler, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Trevor Siemian, and Geno Smith.
There will be teams that will be in the need of a so-called “gap” quarterback for the 2019 season. My top two are the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Dolphins. Followed by the Washington Redskins, because by all accounts Alex Smith will not see the field in 2019. Next, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There are still a ton of question about if Jamison Winston is the guy.
Then there is the New York Giants. In my opinion, the Giants seem in the best position to keep Eli Manning and draft one of these young QBs that might sit behind him for a year.
By all accounts, the NFL draft and upcoming quarterback frenzy will be one to follow. One thing is for sure, I expect a team will make a splash in this draft.
This should be a fun ride.
