The Tennessee Titans have promoted Arthur Smith to the role of offensive coordinator. Last year’s offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur left the team after one year as he was hired as the new head coach for the Green Bay Packers.
Today the team announced that they have promoted Mr. Smith from the position of tight ends coach to offensive coordinator. Arthur Smith has been with the team through four head coaches, Mike Munchak, Ken Whisenhunt, Mike Mularkey, and Mike Vrabel.
The fact that all of these head coaches have kept Arthur Smith on staff speaks volumes about how well he has been respected by the other members of the coaching staff.
Smith has been on staff with the Titans for eight years, working his way up from the bottom where he started as a defensive quality control coach to a successful tight ends coach and now the OC. He has shown that he can work through adversity, with tight end Delanie Walker being injured in the first game of the 2018 season, tight end Jonnu Smith was developed into a strong player with three touchdowns and 20 catches before he was also injured (per Jim Wyatt with Titans online.)
After Jonnu Smith’s injury, tight ends Anthony Firkser and MyCole Pruitt were instrumental in helping the team win against the Giants and Redskins in December, showing that Mr. Smith was able to coach the tight end group well.
Several Titans posted online that they were pleased that Arthur Smith had been promoted from within. Delanie Walker was one of them.
Everything will happen for you all of a sudden and you’ll be thankful you don’t give up. Blessings are coming believe that #congratulations to my new OC and friend looking forward to getting back to work ???#nfl #delaniewalker #nflhighlights #nashville @titans pic.twitter.com/yADcIu3j1U

Left tackle Taylor Lewan also posted on social media that he was proud of the hire. Quarterback Marcus Mariota will be working with his fifth play caller in as many years as he has been with the team. Titans leadership had stated that they wanted to try to provide continuity for Mariota with the hiring of the new offensive coordinator. With the promotion of Arthur Smith, the team will be rewarding a hard worker and respected coach and keeping a familiar face around for the offense.
